From: Crash Lander on 26 Apr 2010 19:21 Hi guys, I know I discussed people movers here a little while ago, but i'm going to drive one today in the hope of buying it. I believe it's a 92 model, with 5 speed manual. Yet to find out if it's 2l or 2.4l, carby or efi etc. It has 219,000km on it. Was apparently previously owned by one of those youth services mobs, presumably to run the kids around in. Interior is pretty tidy, and body is straight and rust free, with some faded paintwork on the front end. Has front bull bar and rear nudge bar. It's on gas. anything I need to be looking for? Driving it at lunchtime today. Crash Lander --

If you get the chance, once it is warmed up run it in 5th at ~80kph and see what "grumbles" it emits when you apply WOT. Apart from those, just the normal things you'd take notice of.

It was a 2L carbie model. I decided to give it a miss. The idle seemed to be excessively fast, which may or may not have been an issue, but I couldn't help but think it was wound up to hide an inability to idle smoothly. Also, although the car had no tacho, it seemed to have a definate hesitation at mid to high revs, which I wasn't too comfortable with. Once I (eventually) got it to 100kph, dropping down to 4th and putting the foot down did virtually nothing, and dropping to 3rd (from 80kph) just made it scream it's nuts off and actually lose speed. Smelt hot as buggery when I got back, and the fumes and heat coming off the engine when I lifted the seat to check things out was quite a shock. Might be normal for these things. I'm not sure. It wouldn't run on petrol, because it needed a fuel pump, which they said they'd do of course. It had done 219,000km. Didn't see any smoke from the rear at all, and it seemed to start ok. 5 speed box was definate in it's feel, and engaggement, but felt a little 'rattly' just as you changed gears. Pulled reasonably severely to the left, which is not really a big deal, as a wheel alignment would take care of that, and it was VERY heavy to turn at low speed due to no power steering. The aircon, whilst it could be heard to turn on and the revs altered when I switched it on, I felt no discernable change in temperature of the air coming though the vents. I think I made the right decision to let it go. He said he hadn't roadworthyed it yet, but still, something just telling me it's not worth getting out of the AU into it. Crash Lander --

Try and get a larger engine:-) Jason

As much as I love carbs for the ability to actually do something about a failure, it's not something I'd be proud of in a '92 era vehicle. > I decided to give it a miss. > The idle seemed to be excessively fast, which may or may not have been > an issue, but I couldn't help but think it was wound up to hide an > inability to idle smoothly. Probably numerous small air leaks and/or carb problems. > Also, although the car had no tacho, it > seemed to have a definate hesitation at mid to high revs, which I > wasn't too comfortable with. Not uncommon for a vehicle of this type. I once drove a Nissan Prarie with 5 adults in it.....it couldn't hold 100kph on a flat road. in 4th you could push it to 105Kph but selecting 5th just took you back down to 98ish. > Smelt hot as buggery when I got back, and the fumes and heat coming off > the engine when I lifted the seat to check things out was quite a > shock. Could be normal but, the idea of hiding an engine away and hoping a radiator will do it all is asking for trouble. > Might be normal for these things. Yeah, it'd be the nastiest swap out for any second hand pump they could get. > It had done 219,000km. Not in itself bad but, it's creeping up there. I fully expect to hear cries of 'Where's the resale value' but, I suspect you aren't planning on any retained value when you decide to get rid of it (had you bought it). > Didn't see any smoke from the rear at all, and it seemed to start ok. > 5 speed box was definate in it's feel, and engaggement, but felt a > little 'rattly' just as you changed gears. You'd expect a noisy gearbox on a car with this milage and lowish gearing. > Pulled reasonably severely to the left, which is not really a big deal, > as a wheel alignment would take care of that, Probably a lot worse than you think. Wheel alignments will only help identify the worn tie rods, ball joints etc. > and it was VERY heavy to > turn at low speed due to no power steering. I had a test driver for a 121 bubble who claimed that the steering was too hard (note the power steering models are actually firmer on turning than without). She then wanted me to drop the value so she could buy power steering for it. I basically told her "I want a Ferrari to, will you give me the difference'. > The aircon, whilst it could > be heard to turn on and the revs altered when I switched it on, I felt > no discernable change in temperature of the air coming though the vents.
