I was going to replace the leads/ distributor cap/rotor arm/spark plugs to see if that sorted it but before I did so I wondered if someone could tell me what the most likely cause could be? If she is going to be keeping the car for a while, and there is no record of when any of the items you mentioned were last changed, I would suggest doing them all. The cost would be minimal.
