Which basically agrees with how I would exit a roundabout, by moving

Have you ever seen National Lampoon's "European Vacation"?

Or The Simpsons' version of the same thing (the England bit at any rate)?

No, there is no need to change lanes to exit that roundabout.

The National Lampoon film excellently parodies many aspects of British life
(eg, how the Americans see British tastes in television - all documentaries
on cheese-making), but the scene where the family can't get off a roundabout
(the one on the south/east side of Lambeth Bridge) is just hilarious.

The Simpsons, in turn, parodied the NL film with the same scene.
