: The only one on the list who's famous for his brain is Ernest
: Rutherford, so I'm guessing very few Kiwis will have heard of him.
: Interesting also that his knighthood isn't recognised, or his peerage,
: whereas Edmund Hillary (famous for climbing up a mountain while
: assisted) is SIR. :)
:
: Most notable absentees are of course Piggy Muldoon, who presided over
: 'em for a decade while the rest of the world laughed, and Terry Clark
: (alias Sinclair) who they'd probably like to pass off as Australian.
:
: You might also note that Burt Munro isn't on the list either.

Pearse, he was the first to fly!

Who the hell cares about Robert Muldoon. Most famous for what, eating burgers!

: Yeah, I find it somewhat amusing that a bloke gets a knighthood for walking
: up the side of a hill and becomes world famous for it, yet the "guide" who
: was with him, a Sherpa named Tenzing Norgay, hardly rates a mention in
: history.
:
: To be fair to Hillary though, he and Norgay were great friends and it was
: through no fault of Hillary's that he received most of the credit for
: climbing Everest. Hillary also did a great deal in helping the people of
: Nepal, building hospitals and schools.

:
: Yeah, an interesting omission I thought.

The origional post was about Burt so thats why he was excluded in my list. Thought that was kinda
obvious.

Rutherford's protege was Mark Oliphant, who most certainly was
Australian. Rutherford died sometime before WW2, it was Oliphant who
oversaw the Manhattan Project. He also happens to have been one of
the most thoroughly decent people I've ever had the honour to have
been in the same room with (back when I worked for Govco). :)

I never met the bloke but I did meet several Kiwis who worked on the
secrete stuff during wwII including Heath Robinson apparently a many
times removed rello who worked on the big banger
Shame we didn't inherit the "smarts" gene ?
