The past few years, he has. Mobil 1 every 2,000 miles. Must be nice to

I always recall VW specifying plain 30SAE for the air cooled engines.

Here in the UK, several manurfactuers- Renualt, Citroen, Vauxhall (GM) have
been on 20,000 mile (or 2 years) oil changes for some while!!!

Thats using semi synthetic- not full synth!!!

It looks like there may have been differences. I've just found
my 1968 copy of the VW "Without Guesswork", which says:

"This booklet contains measurements, clearances, and other
important details for the complete range of VW products from
the introduction of the 30 bhp engine in December 1953. It
should be carried by every VW specialist and not just put into
a drawer somewhere."

I had it in a drawer. Interestingly, it covers things like
octane requirements, but not oil specs. We certainly
recommended multi-grade detergent oil very strongly back then.
