The first assumption is, of course, that they faked it with animation,
i.e. CGI.

It was as fake as one of Kevin Rudd's promises.

Actually, there'd be a few aircraft that couldn't pull a barrel roll.

A regular roll, where an aircraft goes through 360 degrees on it's roll axis
only, is a basic 1g manoeuvre that just about anything with wings is safely
capable of, but a barrel roll is another ball game entirely. In a barrel
roll, the aircraft normally first pitches up fairly hard and *then* rolls
through 360 degrees in a kind of "corkscrew" motion.

This places significantly more strain on the airframe than a regular roll,
and is a routine usually limited to aircraft capable of aerobatic
manoeuvres. Attempting one in something that isn't could see the wing tips
clap hands and the aircraft become a smoking hole in the ground.

Makes sense, why risk a car, driver and support crew and it's associated
costs when a nerd or two behind a PC could probably knock money shot up in
CGI in less than a day.
