Well, decided that its going to be cheaper to have someone take a look at the heads to determine
what the damage is.

Took the heads to a local place and for $65 they crack test each head. Cost $457.00 (A bit steep?)
more and got a face grind, valve stem replacment, new welsh plugs, chemical clean, valve vaccuum
test, valve clearance check. Both heads given cleanbill of health.

So, figured what the hell, if I can pull the heads off I can put them back on eh! (Famous last words
for many a project I'm sure)

Called Repco, $594 for a gasket set, Toyota $704, EBay $123 delivery to the door. Took the Ebay
option ;o)

Found that the power steering pump was leaking so got that rekit- Cost $295 (Again a bit steep I
thought)
Needs a new Rad, $490 including fitment of a thermo switch for electric fan.
Had the extractors sitting ready in the garage from a while ago (Glad I didnt pay to have them fit
before I pulled the heads off! What and absolute prick of a job that would be!!)

So, Im up to refitting the banana bunchon top and slip hitting two small sensors on the back of the
manifold. No biggie eh, theres bound to be plenty around. Nope, no wreckers have one, Toyota want
$298.00 for the two. (No typo). Can only get one from auto sparky wholesalers so hit Ebay again and
$19 later, should be on its way from the States.

With a bit of luck it will go back together okay. Total spend to date is not far under $1500 all up
including the exhaust manifolds. Yet to do is buy a fan (VS C'Dore one should fit okay) and have
the exhaust made up under the car. Hoping to get away under $2k all up.
If Ive not stuffed up then I think its worth the project.

Proof will be if it starts I suppose once its all up and running.

I had no idea Jap parts were so expensive.
They are worse than parts for the LR Discovery!!

Good luck with it Scotty, I'm sure it will all work well :)

I bloody hope so!!

yeah parts for older cars are a bit dear. You would imagine that they would want to get rid om them
eh rather than alienate customers with such high prices. I mean a gasket set for $700 thats fricken
theft!!!

Well with the extractors, decent exhaust, cold air intake mod and a clean up it should run a bit
better than it did before eh.

Scotty,

I modified the air intake on the Disco and it did make a slight
difference. The old air intake had a section half the diameter of the
airflow meter and it collected air from around the dvrs side headlight!
(great for crossing deep water!!)

I fitted a diesel air snorkel on it, best thing I ever did.
I also replaced the exhaust system with a larger diameter.
Left the manifolds in place as they are well designed and have twin
outlets on each side of the V8.

I also fitted a $1,200 Unichip and that really did make a big difference
:)

Every little bit helps :)

Well, tonight I finally fit the induction set and filled it up with oil.

With a once over I checked for loose nuts and bolts, stuck the key in and fired it up.

Bloody thing started after a few turns (to suck in fuel) and away she went, shut it down pretty much
straight away due to no rad or water yet.

Im stoked! Never done a head gasket job before and to have it fire first time was quite rewarding.

The neightbours wondered what the hell was going on as well as its not got an exhuast fitted yet.
Just headers at the moment. Have to drive it to the exhaust shop. Not sure how Im going to get it
there yet, Id prefer just to drive it really to save paying for a tow. Its 3 Kms away on a very busy
stretch of road.

Not sure Im too keen on doing that.

Wonder what the law says about taking a car to the closest repairer? Im sure it would be a tad over
90 Decibels.
