From: Tim Downie on 29 Jun 2010 13:12 My dealer would like to change my VW touran brake fluid every two years. Is this being over cautious or sensible preventative maintenance? Tim

Brake fluid adsorbs water from the air. The water will cause internal corrosion. In theory, it may also boil, turn to steam, and leave you temporarily with no brakes, although I've no direct experience of that happening. Chris -- Remove prejudice to reply.

The linked doc however makes no mention that I can see. So, at sometime in the past the figures were as quoted, but newest blurb has deleted this info

Perhaps it depends upon exact year or something. Every two years is a very sensible change period. Old brake fluid can cause problems as the vehicle gets older, the effects creep up over the years: seized calipers/cylinders and master cylinder faults being the most common results of failure to change. Could be an interesting legal question if old fluid caused brake failure and a crash. fluid change works out at about 30 p per week. (30 quid every two years) you could save that by driving more economically!!
