Self insurance is an option. AA will let you join after you've broken down -
it'll cost you full whack, but if you're only going to break down once every
ten years or less it still comes out cheaper. Other full price outfits (eg
RAC) might do too - but when my friend needed to do this the AA was the
first one they tried. The cheaper breakdown insurance people probably won't.

Although only the simplest of breakdowns can be resolved at the roadside. I
suspect that the majority of AA call-outs will result in a low-loader trip
to a garage.

All the times we've needed to use breakdown at our household its been
(in order):

Starter motor failure on an automatic. (temp fix with hammer)
Headgasket on my old mans moggie minor (recovered - 200 miles that one)
Oil cooler takeoff adapter gasket failing on my V6 Capri. (recovered)
Diff grenading on a MK1 Mondeo (recovered)
Clutch cable failure on MK3 Cavalier (repaired at roadside)
All the bolts on the N/S driveshaft gearbox flange coming undone on a
MK2 Passat - common older Passat problem apparently (towed to garage)
Fuelpump failure on a MK1 Astra (recovered cos it was 3am in the morning
so no parts handy otherwise would've been a roadside repair)

I did have a couple of potential non warm startings on a Capri due to a
knackered carb but managed to get it going before they arrived.

All are things you couldn't anticipate would happen and likely to be
recover to garage on modern stuff.

I'm not prejudiced. I hate everybody equally.

I do mine through Tesco. I got 500 clubcard points for doing it too. They
arrange
the cover via Green Flag and it is cheaper than going to Green Flag direct.
They come out to me twice last year and arrived in 30mins each time. They
also do NOT operate the illegal sexual discrimination policy that the AA/RAC
operate in respect to favouring lone females. A garage in the area you have
broken down in is sent out, so you are not waiting for hours like you do
with
the AA/RAC. You are sent a mechnic and not an AA/RAC sales person who
is pressurised to meeting sales targets each month!
I looked at prices and for what the AA/RAC wanted over 300 for, I get for
68.
If you want to avoid the AA/RAC illegal sexual discrimination and hard sell
at
the roadside then I advise you to go elsewhere. You will save a lot of
money
and get a better service.

Don't be silly - they operate illegal sexual discrimination policies by
suggesting
a female takes priority over a male. They charge more and also pressure
their
sales staff who attend your breakdown (eventually) to sell you things like a
new
battery when it is not required. This sales side of things forms part of
the monthly
appraisal of staff - so you just know you will end up with a sales person
who is
dishonest and knows nothing about cars!
Don't forget, sales people lie to make money every day.
