If you want to throw money away, could you throw it in my direction?

My 528 decided to eat its water pump on the M1 southbound just south of
Watford Thursday at 13.30. Throwing off the belt so no alternator and
power steering. Stopped immediately as the red overheat light came on -
steam pouring out everywhere.
Called the AA. Traffic on the M1 was extremely light and the weather fine.
Called the AA. Took them two hours to arrive - and it was a contractor who
insisted on taking it to a local garage even although there would be no
chance of a fix that day. He was 'off the clock' in half an hour and
wouldn't take us home to London. Of course the garage confirmed this so we
had to wait a further 1 1/2 hours for another transporter who took us home
- and far too late to take the car to the local garage that services it.
So I had to pay to have it transported there as I don't have home start or
whatever.

I've added them to the RAC as a waste of money. I only need a breakdown
service about once every 5 years. Would have been cheaper to phone the
police and ask them to supply a contractor.

Can't remember the last time I saw one of them, except in a museum.

I would expect the AA to refund you your transportation costs if you asked
them to.

I too only ever seem to need a breakdown service about every 5 years. 10
years ago I broke down 280 miles from home (brand new Polo with 800 miles on
the clock). I think that I got my moneys worth that day.

I see them almost daily in London. They use them here a lot to get
through traffic to get to breakdowns quicker. Its amazing what they can
store on the bike itself.
