The chances of a Satnav breaking down are very small indeed. Electronics
companies employ reliability engineers to ensure this does not happen.
The USAF (who run the GPS system) employ probably a few thousand people
to maintain the system and keep it working.

I've *never* seen it happen in more than ten years of using a GPS or
Satnav. If one is walking with one the only normal proviso is that you
carry a spare set of batteries.

Indeed the entire sport of geocaching would not exist without GPS or
satnavs.

Do you have nice systems such as Google Maps and Google Earth? These can be
viewed in advance of a difficult journey. Memorise or print out as required.

Looking at a 4" screen while driving can't be any good. In fact it should be
outlawed, just like mobile phones.
