Price tag shouldn't have anything to do with it - the music is what should be the focus. However, you can't get away with the fact that in a lot of cases, you get what you pay for. My HiFi has been built up over the last ten years. I started with a system that cost 400. I had it for around a year, but I found various aspects of the sound that were not exciting me. So I booked time at dealer listening rooms to find components that would satisfy me. I have ended up with 250 floorstanding speakers, 500 amp and the biggest expense was a 1300 cd player. I sold and purchased the components on Ebay, sometimes selling almost what I paid for the item. I have had my current system for 4 years and still thouroughly enjoy the sound it produces. I end nearly everyday relaxing to jazz, classical or easy listening music from artisits like Dido, Norah Jones, Diana Krall etc. 1300 is a lot of money for a Cd player, but to get there I probably listened to 50 players at various HiFi dealers over a few years. You just will not get the detail of sound from a 200 player. My interconnects cost me 30 and seem to fit the system well. Yes, maybe I could butcher a kettle lead, but I am not into that, I would prefer to just go and buy. Getting back to cars, the shampoo I use now, Zaino Z7, costs 8.95 for a small bottle that is probably good enough for 6 car washes. I have had people say to me that is expensive - yet they will happily take the car through a single car wash for 5, without relising it is scratching their paint to pieces! My shampoo doesn't scratch the car, and costs me just over a pound. Makes me laugh when people start talking of obsessive car cleaning! -- MrBitsy Rover 75 CDTi

I can sell him some special super HiFi improving wax at 250 for 5ml.
