"here" is Victoria? If so, yes, this is the intent. But where I live coming into town there's a spot that have cars parked all the time with "For Sale" signs in the back window. Coppers never seem to do anything about it. And I'm not sure if the local council officers can either, as it's on the Princes Highway, which isn't local government controled, as far as I'm aware. Sounds like a fair enough law, though. But surely, if you sell the car via carsales and have one of its stick on signs in the back window, that should suffice, shouldn't it?

AFAIK it was a council by law and not a State law but most councils have adopted it by now. If so, yes, this is the intent. That seems correct to me, given the workding of the by law quoted by F Murtz. Private land is not "under the control of the local government." Local governments have certain powers in respect of private land, but do not control it - the owner does. Sylvia.

That's why I am always reluctant to ask officials such questions - the answers are only useful if you can trust them, and you can't. See http://law.anu.edu.au/UnitUploads/LAWS8201-1772-Gullet%202%20EPLJ.pdf for a description of a case that establishes that a government department can give you information that is misleading, or indeed just plain wrong, and then prosecute you for breaking the law as a result. Add in - it's an established principle that GovCo jerks are allowed to lie to "protect the revenue" Needless to say (but I will) it's far too small a step away from telling lies to *generate* revenue. -- Toby Formerly we suffered from crimes; now we suffer from laws.
