or it could cost you thousands....

Pay up in two weeks, the papers say, or owe the tollway $15,739 and
eventually lose your driver's license.

Boudreau says she didn't know her I-PASS ran out of money last year
because she thought her credit card automatically refilled it.

That doesn't matter to tollway officials. She is just one of hundreds of
thousands of drivers who did not get violation notices for more than a
year because of a computer glitch.

This is why I'm gald I still have one of the older IPASS units -- the ones
that emit a nice loud beep when you pass through a toll plaza. No guessing
about whether it still works.

You don't have "low balance" or "not paid" lights that light up when
you go through the tollbooths? that's how it works here in VA - if
you see a "low balance" light two days in a row, you know you have an
issue.

But the system could break down in so many ways....

An update: http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/21/2161.asp

<...>

The tollway's appeals process is designed to prevent the overturning of
its decisions. The hearings are conducted by an attorney paid $50 an hour
by the tollway to decide whether it is "more likely than not" that a
motorist is guilty. Under this civil procedure, the tollway prohibits the
hearing officer from considering whether the motorist ever received
notification of the alleged offense or whether the toll road's violation
detection may have malfunctioned.

The only realistic defenses allowed are: "respondent was not the
registered owner of the vehicle in question at the time of the
violations; or respondent has already paid all of the fines and penalties
in full."

Appealing the ruling of a tollway hearing to a circuit court costs $247
in "fees" that are not refunded even if the motorist is found innocent.

IPASS units for the past several years are just dumb bricks without any
indicators of any sort. The very early IPASS units had alerts and/or
indicators, and many of those early units failed.

The lanes off to the side (not open road) and the lanes on ramps have
indicator lights. I've encountered more than one that was non-functional.
Plus, they may see the transponder and indicate all is well anyway . I
doubt they have any connection to the account balance system. I would be
surprised if they did.
