Catapults! Great idea. I nominate Sacramento for the first one!

As for teleporting, we will get it the day after we get usable fusion
power. It's only been 10 years away for the last 30 years.

I don't live in Santa Cruz. I live in Oregon. We have large amounts of
both pan handlers and computer engineers that have moved here from
California. Though, from the sounds of it, Santa Cruz has the same
problem we do: large numbers of people who are unemployed moving in
thinking that somehow their lot in life will be better off if they move
somewhere with extremely high unemployment, just because they saw a
pretty picture in a magazine.

How many Californians does it take to change a light bulb?

8. 1 to change the bulb and 7 to "share in the experience".

How many Oregonians does it take to change a light bulb?

43. 1 to change the bulb and 42 to keep the Californians from moving
here to "share in the experience".

What? And you don't remember Governor Tom McCall and his "Fine, come and
visit, but whatever you do don't move here!" speech from that era that
got some national attention as well?

9. One to change the bulb, and eight to protest about the nuclear
power plant that generates the electricity that powers it.

Actually it's a little different. Santa Cruz has many employed
computer engineers who see on the map that Santa Cruz is only 30 miles
by road from Cupertino, so they move there only to discover that the
commute is anywhere from 1 to 2 hours each way and there are fatal
accidents every month or so. They drive up the rents to the point
where beach bums and students can no longer afford to live there, and
since all their spare time is taken up driving over 17 the rest of the
time they are too rushed and frazzled to be pleasant human beings.
