Officer in fatal crash was intoxicated

The state police corporal who died in a head-on collision early
Wednesday while driving the wrong way on the Schuylkill Expressway had
a blood alcohol level of 0.27 percent, the Philadelphia Medical
Examiner's Office announced this afternoon.

The corporal, who for many years investigated highway accidents for
the state police, was facing a drunken-driving charge from an accident
on Route 422 in Montgomery County last December. At the time, his
blood alcohol level was measured at .30. The state's legal limit is
0.08.

It's even worse when we consider that he was an officer who *investigated*
highway accidents for many years, so he was obviously familiar with the
possibilities. It's fortunate that he didn't kill someone else along the
way (although he did cause injuries).

Along these lines, I think my brother and sister-in-law have a good system.
Neither drinks very much, but they have a rule that they *always* stick to.
That is, if either is going to have a drink in a restaurant or friend's
house, they decide in advance which one will have the drink. The other
person is the driver for the evening (even if only a *single* drink is
involved), and they never deviate from this practice.
