I think it's that most of them are middle and upper middle class and can use the tax deduction. Combine that with the good gas mileage to save some money and they may well come out ahead of things compared to if they bought a non-hybrid. And they get to feel good about themselves. Also I think most of the people who buy them are the kind of people who rarely keep a car more then 5 years or 80,000 miles so they really aren't worried about what's going to happen when that expensive battery goes bad. I'm still holding out for an inexpensive version of the Volt.
