Mass used to ban bikes on sidewalks, but now it's encouraged when there
are no pedestrians on the sidewalks.

I also never could understand riding WITH traffic. Somebody coming up
behind you blows a tire, and you don't know about it until AFTER he's run
you over...

If you're looking in that direction (ie, riding against traffic) then you
can SEE it and get the hell out of the way!

So long as you are taking the lane only when you need to, there
shouldn't be a problem - because taking the lane should only be done
when it is unsafe for the MV traffic to pass you anyway.

As someone who was run off the road once because some numbnuts decided
to pass a cyclist on a blind corner, I am going to have to disagree
with your position. Had that cyclist taken the lane, perhaps the
idiot driver wouldn't have tried to pass him where it was unsafe to do
so. (then again, I might have been in a head-on instead of just
getting some scrapes from the shrubbery on the pass. side of my
car...)

Who makes that judgment of a lane being unsafe, you or the driver? How
about an SUV which is unreasonably W-I-D-E?
