From: Derek C on 15 May 2010 19:14 A lot of roads in my area (West Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire) have recently been fitted with electronic speed limit signs that light up as you drive towards them. However I have noticed that they still light up even if you approach them at well below the speed limit, so I guess they don't actually monitor the speed of the vehicle. Does anyone know if this is a correct assumption? Derek C

However I have noticed that >they still light up even if you approach them at well below the speed >limit The local council (Wirral) have installed a lot of them. They do seem to be rather hair-trigger, lighting up at an indicated 30, where I think a more liberal setting, of say, 33 would have been appropriate. Apart from being ugly with the solar panel stuck on the top, I have to say I don't mind them, they are more useful than a copper hiding in a van with his radar gun. What sort of signs do you mean? 'SLOW' or Scowly faces that show your speed or genuine speed limit terminal/repeater signs which only illuminate at night when there is something driving towards them?

Does anyone know if this is a correct assumption? Most of the ones that I've seen, in Oxfordshire, seem to display the red circle and the white numbers only if you are exceeding the limit, and they seem to correlate pretty accurately with my car's speedometer. A few of them display flashing amber lights at the top and bottom even at a lower speed, but only display the speed limit sign if you exceed the limit.
