It restricts choice in some respects, but expands them in other ways.
Personal choice on the types of restriction I am most happy with, is
those of a caravan. I spent quite a lot of my working life in hotels
and B&B's. In my caravan I have almost complete peace and the freedom.

That sounds hectic, hectic is what I do for my day job. When on holiday
I prefer relaxed.

Hectic? Gawd, no.

I count bimbling around back lanes with no particular destination and
stopping to look at anything that catches my eye as "relaxing".

If you do that kind of "hectic" as your day job, where do I apply?

Yes...

Trouble is they're normally glossy, so even useless for lighting fires.

I think the last one is more likely.

We went to Las Vegas. Amazing place. Got out of there as fast as our car
would carry us once the conference I was there for was over. It's also
tiny - 4 miles from the airport to my hotel on the strip. I rode it on
our bike there, solo. Gets great looks. The hotel staff didn't blink -
pushing a mountain tandem through the casino and putting it inside their
very shiny mirrored lifts required a certain amount of hefting, but they
were fine with it.

The trip down the Grand Canyon was pretty good though - just the noddy
down the mule track to half way, camp 2 nights, go to the bottom in
between, but it was excellent weather (ie not stinkingly hot), the
ranger was surprisingly interesting and the desert was blooming. And the
dam is also pretty interesting.

Bryce Canyon was the best bit of the trip though.

I love the States. We are currently planning our next visit.
