A MOT test is a test of the vehicles ability to meet the minimum
standard for roadworthiness. It failed.

There are additional requirements not in the MOT which are covered by
C&U regs.

Is a car with one failed number plate light driving in daytime
"unroadworthy"?

You drove a defective one to it's MOT and back home again. If you'd have
caused an accident and your car was inspected you may have been done for it.

I can't remember when I last failed an MOT but then my car is service 2-3
times a year so stuff gets picked up more often. I'd have thought defective
ball joints would have been noticable as noise or feeling in the steering.

Not knowing it is defective how else would I get it to the test station
(actually the mechanic who did the service drove it to the test station)

This is the first time a car of mine has failed an MOT that is because I
always have a service beforehand to rectify any problems.
Unfortunately due to the hols the garage is closed till next Monday when
the repairs will be done and a retest taken.

According to the Mechanic the joint is not in any imminent danger of
collapsing but has enough play in it to fail the test.
