Mate at a guess, is it possible she is holduing the button in for longer
than 3 secs to set the "panic" alarm off? I used to have an AU Futura (it
had a panic function) and it was a great car, ugly, but great to drive and
economical to boot. Way way better than my work Commodore Acclaim Wagon.

Make an appointmet with an Automotive Behaviouralist pronto. It sounds
like it's suffering from separation anxiety leading to panic attacks. :)

Absolutely.

The AU was the last "good" car Ford Australia ever made. Since then the
decline has been constant and rapid, and there seems to be no indication
that they're planning on doing anything about it.

Maybe they have sorted out a lot of the problems, my nephews current
model XR6 ute has been fault free so far at 20,000klms.
Only issue he has had is with the rear suspension being too soft for
towing which was fixed by fitting some sort of "rear helper spring"
which is a Ford accessory kit.
So far he's very happy with it.

Korean cars have come a long way in a relatively short time.
One thing the early Sportages had over other similar vintage soft
roaders was that it did actually have some off road ability which did
attract some buyers and you seemed to get a lot for the money, too bad
they weren't screwed together all that well.
