In my opinion that'd be true in some cases, but not all.

There is still a market for large sedans, and the fact that the VE Commy
manages to sell as many units per month as Toyota does Corolla's suggests
that people are willing to fork out for a large'ish car *if* they like the
look of it.

As things stand now, they like the look of the Commodore and not the Falcon,
and I can't say I blame them. I'm not interested in owning either, but the
VE Commy is a great looking car and the Calais V is positively stylish. The
Falcon looks like my grandfather's old cardigan.

Yes - Falcon does look a bit dull. I would still choose it anyday over the
Commo for the Falcon's better steering, much better engine than either the
3.0 or 3.6L Commodore - and wit QLD rego costs - wouldnt want a V8 (more
grunt in Falcon 6 vs COmmodore 6, and better economy - as demonstated in the
bathurst comparo), option of the turbo6 (pisses on the Commo V8 anyway) and
the practicality of the split fold rear seat.

If I had to buy one of the 2 and the choice was based on appearance IMO
the Ford wins easily especially if we are talking about the top of the
range models, the Falcons style is much more conservative and that's
what I like about it.
I doubt styling is what sells more Commodores than Falcons, GMH's
marketing department is where their strength is, they leave Ford's
marketing for dead.
Not many of that type of car appeals to me much but I do like the
styling of current model MB's.

Question must be asked...Why when a car is as big as a Falcon, would
there be any great need for a wagon.

It's obvious that there isn't so sales have plummeted
