In retrospect, those cars were all newer models - but the older ones
were probably using the same or similar design, so probably the same fault.
As you said, losing no fluid probably means the hydraulic system is
intact and so more likely something metal at one end or another has
broken / come off.

Hmm. That was definitely the answer I wanted, but it seems that it
isn't the actual answer. And now it turns out the actual answer is the
more important of the two.

I've booked it in at my friendly local garage as it must be slave
cylinder related. :-(

don't be so quick to condemn the slave as I have heard of problems where the
master cylinder seals flip inside out and give your fault. The slave is a
really major job to do and rather expensive. master cylinder is much
cheaper and easier, so cross your fingers.
