From: Arfa Daily on 17 Jun 2008 14:23 Hi all My daughter has a 1.6 Street Ka on a 54 plate. Recently, she got an engine warning light come up, so took it to a main Ford agent to get it checked. For 45 quid, they have told her that the cat is faulty and needs to be replaced. They have quoted her 690 to do this. She has looked at reviews and so on, on the 'net, and they all suggest that the cat should be around 200 (that is correctly for the 1.6 Street Ka, not the 1.3 bog standard one). I popped in my local garage to ask them. They phoned their supplier whilst I was there, and he had it listed at 160. The garage told me probably 30-50 to fit it, and a few quid to get their tame engine management man in, to reset the warning light, so we said yes. No sooner had we got back home, than the phone is ringing. It's the garage calling to say that their supplier had just rung them back to say that although they had it listed, it was "not yet available" and that it would have to come direct from Ford at 338 plus VAT. They also told them that it was "part of the manifold" (did they just mean that it's one of the cats that bolts directly to the manifold, or is it genuinely integrated with the manifold?) Because of this, the garage said that they would not like to quote 'off the cuff' for replacing it, without having a look first, as they had not had to do one on one of these before. So, anyone got any experience of these ? Is the cat the same as fitted to any other model ? Is there some reason that I'm missing, that is causing the part / job to attract these TTP prices ? Is it common for exhaust parts like this to be 'main agent only' ? Any thoughts, insights, advice etc appreciated. TIA Arfa

You should have a Mitsubishi FTO like my wife has. Lots of main dealer only bits with that. -- Conor I only please one person per day. Today is not your day. A duff dealer can take all the fun out of any car; with Ford, there are plenty around. Where are you in the UK? I know of two excellent dealers, one in Lincolnshire, one at Tadcaster; chances are you're somewhere many miles away... > No sooner had we got back home, than the phone is ringing. I'd get a second and third opinion. What's the mileage on the Streetka, just out of interest? -- The DervMan www.dervman.com

The model she has is not old enough or common enough YET for the pattern parts people to bother making stuff. If it were mine and actually needed a cat (at the price you mention) I would weld in one from something else, mind you I would have a go at getting one under guarantee first!

Lambda sensor failure is though. It is a manifold mounted cat, and there is a known issue with the pre-cat sensor overheating under certain circumstances. Cure is a modified sensor, and an ECU update. I'm guessing the dealer has quoted for a Cat/manifold, hour or so to fit, along with at least one lambda sensor, and another hour for them to update it (pretty much standard charge for anything auto-electrical based involving diagnostic kit). |
