I purchased a Garmin satnav last year. At that time,

Now I went to update, and price has jumped to
$108.90!
(and I think the A-US exhange rate improved since then too)

I picked up a cheapie Laser Navig8r GPS recently for the princely sum of $59.95 and was
pleasantly surprised to see that map updates are freely available over the 'Net with the
emphasis on free.

Why are you paying for Garmin map upgrades???

a quick search of the many GPS forums will give you all you need
for free

I'm not 100% sure yet (it only arrived last week) but I believe it is the Sensis maps.
