I don't think I've read (in this thread) any description of a camera flash
from any supposed Gatso. They do flash on operation (twice in very rapid
succession).

If there was no flash, then either (a) the vehicle was travelling lawfully or
within the speed tolerances for the site, or (b) there was no camera there at
all (possibly the markings were from previous road-works).

The OP should not worry unduly if he saw no camera flash.

How come there was space to overtake you on the left?

Did they use the hard shoulder?

In such a case, overtaking on the left, in a lane leading to a different
motorway, would be perfectly legitimate. As you well know.
