From: Derek C on 29 Mar 2010 06:20 We have just been on holiday in Spain and rented a Hertz car. We were required to pay for a full tank of fuel which is non-refundable whether or not you use it. When I have rented a vehicle in the past, it has always either come full of fuel and you return it full (or get charged at a slightly extortionate rate for refuelling it), or nearly empty and you return that way. As it happened we where just able to use all the fuel, but only because we went on a long sight seeing expedition on a rainy day. This practice hardly encourages you to conserve valuable fossil fuel, or to limit your CO2 emissions! Hertz also charge an extortionate amount extra for adding an extra driver to the insurance and for damage waiver. You may therefore wish to consider other car hire companies. I intend to write to my MP and Euro MPs to complain about the above scams and would recommend that you do the same. Derek C

I never ever use the big rental companies - they all charge over the odds - with Alamo perhaps being a notable exception. Holiday Autos is a good company to get good rates through if you want to book in advance - otherwise just wait until you get to the airport and choose the desk with the biggest queue. You may have a wait but you'll get the best rates! Last time my wife and I went to visit her sister who lives in Andalucia, we pre-booked through Holiday Autos and the rental desk for Crown had a long queue - while the big company desks were empty. I wasn't the named hirer by the way, and the car hire was booked through Ryanair as an allegedly good deal. Derek C

Derek C <del.copeland(a)tiscali.co.uk> gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying: > the car hire was booked through Ryanair All becomes clear. The headline price was all that was looked at, without all the penny- pinching being considered. |
