I had a tyre blow up in similar circumstances about thirty years ago. While I was driving along the steering started to wobble. I checked the tyres and could see a small bulge on one of them. I drove to the nearest tyre fitter - about a mile away and they took the tyre off, then everyone jumped out of the way as the bulge rapidly got bigger and bigger and then the tyre exploded. Fortunately no one was hurt but given the way bit of rubber flew around the bay I could see how someone would get a nasty injury if standing too close.

I probably wouldn't have thought to deflate a tyre with a bulge in before stowing it on the passenger/seat. Pretty horrible accident, during my time working at the airport I was always warned to stay away from aircraft tyres, especially after they have just landed. They are inflated usually to higher pressures than car tyres and the tyres and wheels have been known to explode on stand as they cool. I will generally think harder around damaged tyres now. -- Douglas
