My V6 4mo was alot faster than a GTI (in standard form). There are some guys on the uk-mkiv forum with some seriously modified GTi's (and diesels come to that) A mod some of the guys were doing was smoothing the standard airbox. Some people said it improved things. Also fiited a CAI so the air was being taken from down low in the engine bay where the temps were cooler (although with the recent floods this is probably not a wise idea) Have a go at the smoothing, it's a free modification.

The bigger the holes the noisier it will become.
