I think he's talking about smoothing the intake tract. Removing baffles and
webbing inside the airbox, smoothing the exit from the airbox.

Correct. If you take the lid off the airbox VW added ridges to improve
strength to thr airbox. Remove these 'ridges' to improve airflow.
