Just got a FR30 cam for my Pinto I'm building up for the Capper.

Decided to go with it as it's primarily a torquey cam rather than BHP
and there's a lot of hills where I mainly drive so torque is a bit more
important as BHP . As well as that, the powerband is from 1000-6000 RPM
which is ideal as I'm not building a 9000RPM screamer and I need it to
be a daily driver.

Got just over 11mm lift which is nearly twice the standard. Do you
reckon I'll get away with standard valve springs or am I looking at a
set of doubles?

Bet you are going to use std valves and not bother to check spring and
piston/valve clearanaces either!

Well you're not looking for mega revs, so that's part of the deal for a
start off.
Second issue would be the actual cam profile and how aggresive the ramps
are.
Mega lift is good, but if it's a torquey cam rather than a screamer then it
may be a bit more forgiving in that respect.

What about installed valve length versus spring length. i.e. with virtually
twice the lift of standard, are you likely to encounter spring binding at
all.
(Right enough you're talking about valve lift rather than lift measured at
the cam lobe.)
Gotta love Pinto valvetrain gemoetry.

I think you have to check both issues before prpgressing - double versus
single springs / spring binding possibility.

I'm going to be using an Injection head from a Sierra and am going to
use standard valves. It's not going to be a mega power motor.

As for spring and valve to piston clearances, I thought I'd just whack
the whole lot together, fire it up and run straight up to the redline.

It's not like I've built engines before.

Aye. Got to keep a close eye on the angle those finger followers are
at.

Going to try it on the bench with the originals in first and see what
happens. Might just say sod it and splash out for some Kent ones
anyway.
