Here is what happened then
the fuckwit was filling it in the back of his car/wagon/4WD to hide the
fact that he was doing it, and of course filled the rear of his car with
vapours because of his dodgey adapter when his Engel's compressor kicked in

what's the bet he's 'been doing it for years without incident"

Some people will even tell you it's safe to fill fuel drums in the boot
of a car

Just because some cockhead does it the wrong doesn't mean it isn't safe
if done correctly.
If something can de done for very many years "without incident" that's a
very good indication that its safe, the difference is that the person
doing the filling needs to be trained how to do it safely and Joe Public
shouldn't be allowed to do it themselves.

Thanks AC, I knew I could trust you to find it, fucked if I could, thought I
had dreamed it there for a while. No doubt he was filling it in the car so
as to hide the fact of what he was doing, or isn't it illegal filling a gas
bottle from a car bowser?

Which meant what exactly?

The "regs" demand that bottles other than car gas tanks can't be filled from
lpg bowsers at service stations, but that doesn't mean the practice isn't
safe. Like all regulations, they're designed to guard against idiots who
can't pick their nose without going into a coma, rather than unsafe
practices specifically.

It's like filling petrol containers in the boot or back of a ute
people have been doing that for years too. but there are also lots of
fires during the process(plenty that you don't see in the news). but the
worst thing is what happens when it does go WOOF, and it's this that
makes the situation worse. Their first reaction is to jump back, pump in
hand and the trigger still open.

What is worse is that people fill drums in the back of wagons with their
family sitting in the seats next to or in front of the process

The problem with filling any fuel container(gas or petrol) is the
vapours, inside the cabin with who knows what dodgey electrical problems
and in this case, something no one would thing about, an electrical motor
