Exactly, lots of ways to fail - but only one way for them to work
correctly.

Getting back to the usefulness of hand/arm signals...

There is one particular place I visit on a regular basis. Getting there
involves coming down a slip road in a town centre, then crossing four
lanes of free moving traffic within 50 yards to make a right turn at
some lights. I always use a hand signal there and it always works,
whereas indicators alone are often ignored.

It really surprises me, that the modern driving
test does not have a session on hand signals.
Like you say, there are the odd occasion when they
can be beneficial.
