Hmmm
is it a 40 or 45
the 40s had the "B" engine, 4cyl 3L and later 3B 3.4L(there was also a
light duty LJ40, these had the 2L 2.4L diesel engine and Hilux running gear)
the 45s and 55s had the 6 cyl "H" engine
All Toyotas models have the engine in their number
and their model number will tell you what you have
so a HJ45 would be
H= H diesel engine, J= Landcruiser, 45= Body type
the turbo 60s were HTJ60
mine is a HZJ105, Hz diesel Landcruiser 100 series standard wagon

the old H engine is getting on in years and may not have been a popular
engine due to the fact that petrol wasn't that expensive so spares for
the H may not be easy to find

The H could always be swapped for a 2H, these engines were very popular
and powered everything from utes, troopys(late 45 and early 75 series)
and 60series wagons

kev, thanks for the info., i`m a very recent convert to toyota, all of
four weeks in fact :^)..... not a planned move but the old girl was cheap,
and is definately more comfortable than the landie (must be getting old) i
should have been clearer in my post....the h motor was installed by the po,
it had the petrol engine previously afaik. it`s registered with the diesel
in it. the motor feels underpowered, with no legs, the old drive it like you
hate it adage comes to mind :^) but in respect to the age of the thing,
ive been taking it easy.....i will check the injectors, and maybe fiddle
with the timing..but maybe its just the way there engines are ?? also, on
first startup of the day, i glow it for 10-15 seconds and it starts on first
turn of the crank, but, for at least a minute, it runs really rough, with
enough (fuel) smoke coming out of it to kill every mozzie for miles
around........but every subsequent start is ok. 5sec., glow and no smoke.
crook glow plug(s) maybe ? gotta fix it or the neighbors will be calling the
epa :^)

cheers john

the noise it makes creates mental pictures of nasty happenings :^) a
chamber(S) full of raw fuel.....a mate of mine has an injector tester, so
will check `em out......the glowplugs will be checked today

As the others have said sounds like a crook injector
get ya mate to check them
also a set of extractors and 2 1/2 inch exhaust will make a noticable
difference up around highway running speed
also replace the air filter, this will also make a difference if it's
old and blocked, of course the obligitory oil change will be nessasary
especially if it has a dripping injector, that raw diesel will make it's
way into the oil
