From: TheScullster on 13 Jul 2010 04:00 Hi all Does it do any lasting damage, running with a low oil level? Our Mazda 6 ran low enough on oil recently for the oil light to flash on once. Yes I know, I should be regularly checking etc....... Topped it up last night and it needed over 2L, which looks like it was down to about 1/2 the usual fill amount :(. No obvious signs of problems like increased engine noise. Would this have any impact on fuel economy, or is the recent heavy use all down to air-con load? TIA Phil

As in virtually zero oil pressure - the reason it comes on with low level is because the pickup and pump are sucking air...

Was that the oil pressure light, or oil level one? Some cars have both. If it were the pressure one it means no oil was getting to the bearings, etc, for a brief period. > Yes I know, I should be regularly checking etc....... Air con does, though. -- *I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are missing * Dave Plowman dave(a)davenoise.co.uk London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound.

Furry muff. I've never once seen a low oil level light. Oil level gauges, yes. Idiot light, no. But I tend to avoid Japanese cars.
