There's no real difference when it comes to enforcement - a bit less if
anything due to fewer Police patrols. There does seem to be a trend
towards slower speeds these days - you don't see so many people tanking
it along at 80-90 like you used to. Presumably this is to save fuel.

a) The OP made no mention of Scotland, unless you're suggesting that the
north-west of Scotland has acquired motorways in the last couple of months.
b) I said, very carefully, "in general". By mentioning only some on the M876
you have conformed my point.

Don't be such a bloody pedant.

He mentions the UK (which Scotland is a part of). Perhaps he means the northwest of Scotland? He
mentions motorways, not "motorways except in Scotland".

There is a set of semi official guidelines for all the various speed
limits set by the association of chiefs of police officers (ACPO) to
cover errors in speedometers and momentary thoughtless violations.
There's a table of them here :

http://www.speedlimit.org.uk/faq.html#ACPO

(Suggest you check out this site + other speed camera sites)

For example In a 70 limit you would not as a rule get ticketed for
driving up to an indicated 79 mph including all the various errors.
This has only the legal status of a concession, but If you aim to
drive at an indicated 72 you won't attract the attention of the police
(you don't have to brake violently if you come across a police car),
won't get tickets, and won't appear conspicuously slow.

Be aware that in so called "Built up areas" the default limit is 30
mph, alternatively the limit could be higher or lower.
There will never be any repeater signs showing 30 mph, so watch out
and keep a good tally.

BTW A "Built up area" is defined as "Where there are three or more
lamps throwing light on the carriageway and placed not more than 183
metres apart." So the criteria is presence or absence of street lamps
and not buildings.

Have fun with your tape measure.

North-West ???

Stenhousemuir (Nil) is only about one quarter the distance from the
border at Coldstream that John O' Groats is.

Well England has. The new 8 lane section of the M1 (Ca. 20 miles)
through Derbyshire has camera warnings (M25 style) on most of the
gantries.

That must be painful.
