Mr Cannon, 25, said he was waiting for a break in the heavy traffic to reverse onto his property on August 10 last year and appealed the ticket at West Allerdale Magistrate's Court.

So he wasn't fined for "reversing into his driveway". He was fined for waiting on pedestrian crossing markings.

Police state, jobsworths and this article plainly shows that some of our police officers do not understand between common sense, the spirit of the law or probably even how to tie their own bootlaces. I came back to the UK because economically Southern Africa is stuffed, but the mentality of the people I have encountered has left me bewildered as to where has the UK that I left 30 years ago gone to. Given that there may be a good reason for him *reversing* into the driveway (eg so he doesn't have to reverse out into busy traffic) I wonder what he should have done differently? Not tried to park in his driveway at a time when there was heavy traffic which prevented him completing the manoeuvre without having to wait? Sounds like the case fails a "reasonableness" test.

Pause, for just one moment, and ask yourself how long the zig-zag markings are for the average pedestrian crossing. If there's a break in the traffic long enough to allow him to swing across the road to reverse in, then there's a break long enough for him to drive forward a car's length first. |
