Actually, no.

MS got the contract because there was no competition. They literally
passed on the chance when it was first offered to them, because they
weren't an OS company.

Then they told IBM that they had an OS, when in fact they didn't. Then
they bought another man's copy of the only other OS that would have been
appropriate and IBM made one of the biggest blunders in the history
of... ...history.

Yeah, he was pretty easy to abuse, I miss that. So many opportunities for
comedy. Nixon and Ford pale in comparison.

That's what I don't understand. The difference between a Lumina and a
Camry, while significant, is nowhere near as pronounced as the
differences between Windows and *nix. In some cases, the superior
alternative to Windows is *free* so long as you have a working
computer, a high speed internet connection, and a CD-ROM burner.

The basic difference between the two is distribution, it'd be like
getting a Chevy automatically whenever you renewed your driver's
license. For many people, they'd PREFER a Porsche or BMW or even just
a nice Camry, but don't care enough to go through the hassle of
getting rid of the Chevy, because, after all, it runs. Sort of. Most
of the time.

GM owners are in no way "locked in" to GM products. Only in fscked-up
market like the desktop OS market can a company produce as crappy a
product as Windows and still maintain their market share.

Oh, you won't be missing it at all.
