T'other day, one of those Police, Camera, Action type programs. I don't
usually watch them, however...

Built up area a DC. The police driver was using B&T's in L2 and rapidly
catching up on a car in L1. Despite the B&T's its driver drifted over
into L2 and the path of the police car and collided side on with it.
What could/should the police driver have done to avoid it?

No, not to the left, but not directly right either. If there are three
lanes and lane three is clear, use that and put some distance between
you. What exactly do you mean by extra care? If you are directly to the
right of this guy when they swerve right, you will be in trouble.

IF there is a space enough to give an extra lane space, yes then use
it.
