Not necessarily.

The Terry cost us 2500 to convert out of our pockets and that was paid for
in a little over 12 months.

It must either be doing well above average klms or be very thirsty, to
save $2500 in a year it would have to using double that if on petrol and
$5000 is a lot of petrol.
Last financial year our 2 vehicles used $6300 of fuel to do approx
65,000klms.

It costs just under a hundred bucks to fill the tank in the Terry, and it
has done for most of the time we've owned it give or take a few bucks either
way. That lasts a week on average, and that equates to 5 grand a year in
fuel. Putting it on gas dropped it's weekly fuel bill by slightly over half,
paying for the gas conversion in a bit over 12 months.

I expected the Rodeo to take longer as I wasn't using it very often
initially, but then I've done 10k km's in the thing since I converted it so
it'll probably pay for itself quicker than I expected.

Seems that way, the fuel economy of the TD is impressive.
The annual fuel bill dropped by about $2000 when I replaced the petrol
Hilux with a diesel, the current Hilux is just over a year old and has
done 50,000klms.
The Forester has just had its first service at 12,500klms and we picked
it up at the end of January so its doesn't do that many klms.
