The fact that it is only 52p/litre in the US shows how much taxation there is on fuel over here.

Well you should know. You have conveniently chosen the diesel price and ignored some important factors. Many countries with cheap diesel impose road tax at a higher rate. In NL for example, the roadtax for a diesel is double that for a petrol engined car, a Ford Mondeo diesel will set you back about 1400 quid in road tax for a year. Diesel engined vehicles are subject to a higher roadtax in Germany also. I specified W. Europe in my post. Of the 27 countries in your list, 12 are not in WESTERN Europe including USA. E European countries have a significantly lower standard of living making fuel relatively more expensive. Petrol prices tell a different story http://www.theaa.com/onlinenews/allaboutcars/fuel/2010/april2010.pdf UK new car prices are some of the lowest in Europe http://ec.europa.eu/competition/sectors/motor_vehicles/prices/report.html I hope you read this post more carefully than the last one. I was referring to the cost of running a car and not just the price of diesel. -- GEoff

Wrong. UK new car prices are some of the lowest in Europe http://ec.europa.eu/competition/sectors/motor_vehicles/prices/report.html France has a lot of toll roads, but you > don't have to use them, as the national (toll free) roads are quite > good anyway. > As they are in the UK, still takes significantly more time on a long journey though. eg. In 10hrs using autoroutes I can cover 800km in a day. Using RN that figure drops to max 500km ( in a lorry). -- Geoff

Never mind the name of it - we all know that Labour have been terrified since 2000 of a re-emergence of the Peoples' Fuel Campaign - what is the practical difference?
