http://www.toyotapartscheap.com says that the MSRP of the 2001 Prius
hybrid battery is $2,299.00, but they offer it for $1,839.20. Of course,
there would be labor costs to install it if you are not capable of doing
it yourself, but $1,400+ seems like quite a lot of labor even at dealer
prices.

http://www.car-part.com indicates that salvage batteries for a 2001-2003
Prius are being offered for $500 to $1,000.

Someone may just want to shop around...

Energy breakthrough announcements are a dime a dozen. Most likely
this one won't pan out. If it does, the environmentalists will rally
against it. It's only slightly more efficient than a power plant.

It certainly scales down more easily. But if one can run a home,
well, one power plant is still much cheaper faster to build than hundreds of
thousands of thousands ot these things, so power plants still hold the
upper end. At least until you can crank these things out as fast and
as cheap as cars. Even at that point, you're stuck with relatively
expensive natural gas; good for California (which is using the stuff
for power generation anyway), not so good (in terms of cost) for the
coal-powered East.

As for green-ness, like I said, it's only slightly more efficient than
a natural gas powerplant.
