My first thought when I heard about this was "Huh? How many deaths have there been *because* a driver had a BAC of 0.04, let alone 0.03? (i.e. not just *coinciding* with a driver having a BAC of 0.04/3)" All that's going to happen is they'll catch a SHITLOAD more drivers for being over a limit. A limit so low that many will feel completely sober while being horribly and callously illegal. <sarcasm> Gee, I wonder what the motivation behind this push is... </sarcasm>

Agreed. You can just imagine a bunch of teenagers on a binge night deciding " we better not drink past 0.05, let alone 0.02"...its time we told the morons in govt that we wont accept laws based on knee-jerk reactions. The loss of revenue from this new proposed 0.02 law, forcing decent people to basically stop drinking at all before driving, will only mean govt will seek even more ridiculous means to generate revenue. God help us all.

Same goes for speed, regardless of other factors. Publicity put out depends on what the various officials are trying to justify at the time. For a long time I've thought that the worst statistic is the actual death figure itself as there's such a fine line between a death and being a quadriplegic etc. A long time ago while a group of us were regularly commuting to a country job we had one driver who had most of us scared and declining to travel in his car. He used to sit at an angle with his back almost against the "B" pillar so he could chat to passengers easier. He was a smoker and did it with the left hand, but when butting it he would take it with the right hand and put that hand through the centre of the steering wheel to get to the ash tray. It was frightening to watch. We started talking about the State death toll and that sooner or later we would have one or more ourselves with the amount of country trips. He actually took it so seriously that he went the other way to far and would sit bolt upright, both hands on wheel in a death grip and drive way slow. We actually didn't want to travel with him then as it took so long to get there. PhilD
