A couple of weeks ago my renewal reminder from RAC arrived, whilst I
was away. On opening it and reading the bottom few lines, it said not
to worry they will renew it automatically and debit my credit card from
the details I provided them with last year - WHAT, without my
permission?

I rang them 6 days ago and told them not to attempt to debit my CC
without my permission and could they send me a letter confirming my
call.

A letter from them turned up today, a second reminder saying exactly
the same as the first - they would debit my credit card and renew my
insurance.

They used to offer a discount if you opted for automatic renewal (15 quid
pa) so I would always opt for it and then cancel the auto renewal. Now they
just do it anyway.

I will not be renewing this year though. The price is too high, especially
since I have not claimed in about 10 years and now they give you quite a
large no claim discount (which you lose if you claim/callout), the cost of
calling them out is so high (in lost NCD) you may as well not bother.

Bye bye RAC.

No, with your permission. You just didn't bother reading the bit where
you gave them permission last year.

A lot of things where you pay an annual subscription do an automatic renewal
and direct debit. All the car insurance companies I've ever insured my car
with send out a schedule a few weeks before the insurance becomes due,
quoting the price for the fothcoming policy year, and then if you don't
cancel by a certain date they debit the money and send you the certificate
of insurance.

Societiesand organisations such as National Trust and English Heritage
automatically renew you. The only difference is that they don't send a
reminder in advance - they just do it. However because they don't send a
reminder (to keep postage costs down) they will usually allow you to cancel
(and refund the subscription already taken) for so many days after the
membership card is sent and the money is debited.

Here, read this: Adrian agrees to pay The Peeler 200 pounds a year.
You've read it. Therefore I have your permission to charge your
credit card.
