First thing to check when leaking or burning oil on these engines is the
crankcase breather system which is usually neglected. If it's an injection
model, remove the rubber hose that runs from the flame tramp on the top
front of the drivers side rocker cover to the plenum, one end at a time,
and try blowing through it with your mouth. If you can't easily in both
directions investigate why.
Others have mentioned a worn cam - and that's very common at high mileage
or where oil changes have been neglected. But happens pretty gradually.
Have you checked the plug leads?
