From: Kiteflyer on 7 Apr 2010 18:49 Catalytic converter went. Took car to Kwik Fit and they wanted nearly £400 for both pieces. So went to ATS and they did it for £169. First part much cheaper than Kwik Fit and second part wasn't even needed as they repaired it. Kwik Fit used to be cheap from what I can remember and was madly busy. Now the place is empty. Not surprised at those prices.

Not surprised at those prices. I never remember them being cheap. That said, they're a franchise operation, so there is the faint possibility that there's a good branch somewhere.

I have avoided Kwik Fit for years after I watched them trying to rip people off as I was waiting for a backbox to be fitted to a car. It must have been "faulty brake" day as everyone that went in seemed to need new brakes. They even refused to get my car down unless I agreed to new rear shock absorbers so I had to call the Police in the end. They were desperate for sales. A branch of ATS was no better, they messed up tracking on one car and as I waited I watched a heroin addict walk in with a bag of stolen portable CD players. One of the staff bought one and then the customers waiting were pestered, so I called the head office and complained. If you understood how this type of garage works, it is unfair on the staff. The Managers are told they will meet a certain sales target that month however they must do it. So they pressure the staff in to selling a lot of items that are not required. Anything quick and easy for maximum profit will do. So they go for brakes, shock absorbers, bulbs, wipers, batteries, exhausts etc. Each corner of a car is worth a set amount and they must get as much as they can. This has all been on TV with secret filming and is common knowledge. It's similar to some breakdown services that have sales targets, the staff must sell and will lie to do so. The RAC was caught out doing that on one programme. I soon found that the main garage for whichever make of car I had was CHEAPER and used GENUINE approved parts, not the copies and cheap stuff. The work was also guaranteed. if you had any common sense, with the reputation Kwik Fit has, you wouldn't go anywhere near them - they have ruined the brand and business by ripping people off. Kwik Fit is not a name most people would trust now. You also have to watch some main dealerships, they seem to be going the same way very slowly. I have noticed it after dealing with cases for Trading Standards who are next to useless at anything other than taking pirate DVDs off market stalls. They will not fight companies with money so don't protect the consumer. You didn't get a poor mechanic - you got a SALES person, the type of person that has ruined Kwik Fit.
