Like your mother, I live in the middle of the Peak District. Like her,
I've never felt the slightest need of a 4x4, although everybody else
seems to like poncing about in them. I've never been stuck behind a snow
plough, but I have been skidded into by a 4x4 - 4-wheel drive doesn't
make your brakes any better.

I hope you will have at least a little bit of sympathy for the British
workers at Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, etc, whose jobs are now
under threat by yet another Gordon Brown stealth tax on motorists!

As the majority of these marques are exported it isn't going to make the
slightest difference

We drive 15,000 miles a year in a Land Rover and emit 4.5 tons of CO2

one return flight to Canaries is 1.25 tons, they say emissions at
altitude are 2 to 3 times worse, maybe the penalties could be spread a
little fairer.

I would say you still live in the early 20C if you think labour is
involved in a working class struggle, Blair admired Thatcher, not
Trotsky.
