I'll say.

The reason they didn't do it back then is that they didn't have cars.

I remember one fellow pupil at my grammar school whose father *sometimes*
used to collect him in a car. But certinly not every day.

Hmmm...

Doubtful.

I can see your point. After all, the nearest school - no matter how bad it
may be - is good enough for anyone's children, isn't it?

Let's recap on what you said...

When the local authority does the allocation (on whatever political basis
they prefer), that's absolyely fair enough AFAYAC and definitely not social
engineering.

But when a parent decides on the best school available for their child,
that's social engineering?

My parents owned a Ford Prefect, and cars weren't all that uncommon!

on the commute bike, with it's powerful lights if any thing in the
winter dark traffic is much more careful, and aware.

I walked to school in Scotland in the 60's it took about 15 minutes.
If the weather was lousy we took a bus except most days we used the
bus fare to buy 10 Players No6. So we walked anyway. We moved to South
Africa in 1972 and school was 40 minute walk so we cycled. We moved
schools however after a few months to a school in another town as it
was a solely English medium school it was 30 km away so we had to use
a bus. And who needs a 4x4 in city or town limits, they are not any
safer than a car and certainly less stable as they have a higher
centre of gravity. And even worse 4x4's with ultra low profile tyres,
christ 4x4's are for bundu bashing. Idiots
