I am pleased that the relatively new trend of putting flowers at the scene
of a road death hasn't extended to hospital beds.

Imagine being given a bed in a hospital and it having old and dying bunches
of flowers tied to it.

Are such tributes left by people who can't be bothered to go to the funeral?

Its just recreational grieving. Some people (usually woman) get a warm fuzzy
glow from grieving for someone thay may only personally know in passing or not
at all. Eg Diana.

it does remind you that road deaths occur all around and to be
careful. But they are not all RTAs. A couple round here have been
stabbings. I think most leaving flowers will have known the victim as
a neighbour.

There was talk of forcing people to remove them after a certain amount of
time after the incident (accident, stabbing, whatever). The reason was that
they actually serve to distract drivers, sometimes on a section of road that
requires more concentration that others, which in some cases was the reason
for the original accident. IYSWIM!
